Instagram DM limits: length, daily caps and the number Instagram won't publish

Every Instagram DM limit in one place: characters vs bytes, daily sending caps, message requests, group size, and why a message fails to send. All sourced.

Search “Instagram DM limit per day” and you'll find confident numbers: 50, 100, 200, “verified accounts get 300.” We went through Instagram's Help Center and Meta's developer docs on 4 October 2026 looking for any of them. None is there. What Instagram does publish is shorter, and more useful once you know how to read it. Below is every DM limit you can run into, each labeled: official, reported, or folklore.

How long can an Instagram DM be?

There are two answers, and they use different units.

Typing in the app: the limit is widely reported as 1,000 characters per message, with the app refusing anything past that. We couldn't find a character limit anywhere in Instagram's Help Center: its pages on sending messages, message types and messaging limits don't mention one. So 1,000 is a reported number, not an official one.

Sent by an automation: Meta's Messaging API is exact. Message text must be UTF-8 and be a 1000 bytes or less (Meta, Messaging API). A byte is a unit of storage, not a letter. English letters take one byte each. Accented letters like é take two. Hindi, Chinese and Japanese characters take three or more. Most emoji take four, and the family emoji 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 takes 25 while looking like a single character.

Typed in the Instagram app

111 / 1,000 characters

Widely reported limit. Instagram's help pages don't state one.

Sent by an automation (Meta's API)

111 / 1,000 bytes

Meta's documented limit: 1000 bytes or less of UTF-8 text.

  • English letters, digits, spaces1 byte each · 111 = 111 bytes
  • Accented, Arabic, Cyrillic, Hebrew2 bytes each
  • Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai3+ bytes each
  • Emojiusually 4+ bytes each

Fits both. Plain English is 1 byte per character, so here the two limits are the same: 889 left.

Characters here are what you see on screen, so an emoji with a skin tone counts as one. Instagram doesn't say how its app counts, so treat the app meter as a guide.

Tap Long Hindi: a few hundred characters on screen, nowhere near the app's reported limit, and still over 1,000 bytes. That gap is why an automated DM in Hindi, or full of emoji, can be rejected while the same text typed by hand goes through.

How many DMs can you send on Instagram per day?

Instagram doesn't say. Its Help Center article on messaging limits is three sentences long, and none of them contains a daily number:

Notice what it measures: messages people may not want. Not a count.

The numbers you'll see elsewhere

We read three DM-tool blogs that come up for this search, on 4 October 2026. Here's what each says a day of DMs looks like:

DMs per day, as quoted by three DM-tool vendor blogs, read 4 Oct 2026. Amber: new accounts. Green: 1–6 months old. Magenta: older than 6 months. Dark: verified. None cites Instagram.

The spread is the tell: from about 20 a day to 300, depending on who you ask. Two of the three blogs say outright that their figures come from user reports. None links to Instagram, because there's nothing to link to.

Why no single number works

Instagram doesn't explain how it decides, so this part is our reading, not Instagram's words. Its help page talks about unwanted messages. Meta's Spam standard targets activity done either manually or automatically, at very high frequencies (Meta, Spam). Put together, these are the things most likely to matter:

  • Speed. Thirty messages in five minutes looks nothing like thirty across a day.
  • Strangers. DMs to people who don't follow you arrive as requests they can ignore or decline.
  • Copy-paste. The same text and link sent to many people is what spam looks like.
  • Reports. People can report a request from their Spam folder, which sends it to Instagram's team for review (Instagram Help).
  • Account age. Tool blogs consistently report that new accounts get blocked sooner. Instagram doesn't say this, but it costs nothing to go slowly on a new account.

What “Try again later” means

Instagram gives one documented reason for this message: if inauthentic activity is detected on your account, you may see an error message that says, “Try again later”. The same page says that can mean someone else has your password, and lists the fixes: change your password, revoke third-party apps you don't trust and turn on two-factor authentication (Instagram Help).

If you DM by hand, a few habits keep you on the right side of “people may not want”:

  • Message people who expect it: they commented, replied to your Story or asked you something.
  • Write each message, or at least change the opening line. Don't paste one text to fifty strangers.
  • Spread them out over the day.
  • For volume, let people ask first. With comment-to-DM, everyone you message just commented asking for it, and Meta's published API limits apply instead of guesswork.

Message requests: who can DM you, and what you can send

You can send a message to anyone when using Instagram. What changes is where it lands. If they don't follow you, depending on their settings, it arrives as a message request. Once they accept, your next messages go straight to their chats (Instagram Help).

Voice notes
Disappearing photos and videosOnly to people who follow you or approved your messages
Source: Instagram Help Center, “Send a message to someone” and “Who you can send messages to”, checked 4 Oct 2026.

Some people can't get your request at all:

  • People who switched requests off. In Message controls, anyone can choose whether message requests from people on Instagram go to your Message Requests folder or whether to receive them at all (Instagram Help).
  • Teen Accounts. They are automatically set to only receive messages from accounts they follow or have previously connected with (Instagram Help).
  • People who blocked you. As the same Message controls page puts it from their side, Accounts you've blocked won't be able to send you message requests.
  • Filtered requests. Requests that look like scams or contain someone's Hidden Words go to a separate Spam folder, and You won't receive notifications for spam. The filter for unwanted requests is off by default (Instagram Help).

Is there a cap on how many requests you can send? Instagram doesn't publish one. The limit Meta describes is about content, not count: People can't send images, videos, or voice notes in message requests until the recipient accepts the request to chat (Meta Newsroom). Figures like “10–20 requests a day for new accounts” come from tool blogs, not Instagram. If you're sorting your own inbox, see our guide to Instagram message requests.

Limits for automated DMs

If a tool answers comments or DMs for you, it runs on Meta's Instagram API, and those limits are published. The ones that matter most:

  • One private reply per comment, within 7 days. A private reply is the DM a business sends in response to a comment. Meta: Only one message can be sent to the commenter (Private Replies).
  • 24 hours to keep talking after the person responds. Each new message from them restarts it.
  • 750 private replies an hour per account for comments on posts and Reels, and 100 messages a second for text and links, 10 a second for audio or video (Platform overview).
  • 1,000 bytes of text per message, as in the checker above.

Where the private reply lands depends on whether they follow you:

Follows you

Doesn't follow you

9:41
ChatsRequests (1)

studio.mae

The same private reply in two inboxes. Meta: it goes to the Inbox if the person follows you, and to the Request folder if they don't.

We cover each rule with Meta's own wording, plus the 24-hour window and follow checks, in Instagram DM automation rules.

DMFa.st sends first DMs at up to 600 an hour, below Meta's 750, so a Reel that pulls thousands of keyword comments becomes a queue instead of a wall of errors. Queued DMs aren't dropped while they're inside the 7-day window, and if Instagram asks it to slow down, sending pauses and resumes on its own.

Instagram message failed to send? Check these in order

  1. Rule out the app and your connection

Instagram's own order: update the app and your phone's system, restart the phone, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data, then delete and reinstall the app (Instagram Help).

  2. Sending a photo, video or voice note to someone new?

If they haven't accepted your request, only text goes through. Send text and wait for them to accept.

  3. Sent a lot of DMs quickly?

You may be paused from sending DMs for a period of time. Stop rather than retry, and check Account Status → Features you can't use.

  4. Seeing “Try again later”?

Instagram links it to inauthentic activity on your account. Change your password, revoke apps you don't trust and turn on two-factor authentication.

  5. Check their side

They may have switched requests off, have a Teen Account or have blocked you. If they restricted you, messages still send, but you won't see whether they've read them: restricted people won't be able to see when you're online or if you've read their messages (Instagram Help).

  6. Check the length and the forward count

Over about 1,000 characters (the reported limit)? Split it. Forwarding goes to at most 5 chats at a time.

  7. Still failing? Report a bug

Instagram's troubleshooting page says that if none of this helps, it could be a bug or a broken feature, and asks you to report it from the app.

Instagram DM limits: FAQ

What is the Instagram DM character limit?

It's widely reported as 1,000 characters per message when you type in the app, though Instagram's help pages don't state a number. Messages sent through Meta's API are capped at 1,000 bytes, which holds fewer characters if you use emoji or non-English scripts.

How many DMs can I send per day on Instagram?

Instagram doesn't publish a number. It limits messages people may not want, and may stop you sending DMs for a period of time if you keep going after a warning. Figures from 20 to 300 a day come from tool blogs and user reports, not Instagram.

Why does Instagram say “message failed to send”?

The usual causes are a weak connection or an old app version, a photo, video or voice note sent in a request that hasn't been accepted, a temporary messaging limit after sending too many, or the other person's settings. Work through the checklist above, in order.

Is there a limit on message requests?

Instagram doesn't publish a count. It limits what a request can contain: text only, until the person accepts. People can also switch requests off, and Teen Accounts only receive messages from accounts they follow or have connected with.

How long can an Instagram voice message be?

Instagram's help page doesn't say. Tech press reported in May 2025 that Instagram raised the maximum from one minute to five.

How many people can be in an Instagram group chat?

Up to 250 for most group chats, according to Instagram's Help Center.
