How to sell on Instagram in 2026: your DMs are the checkout now

How to sell on Instagram without a website: the comment-to-DM sales funnel, payment links, 2026 Shop rules, what you can't sell, and a revenue calculator.

12 min read

Open the comments under a small shop's Reel and you'll often find them: โ€œprice?โ€, โ€œhow much??โ€, โ€œlink plsโ€. Some never get an answer. Others get โ€œcheck DM ๐Ÿ’Œโ€ the next morning, long after the buyer scrolled on.

Meanwhile, Instagram's own checkout is gone. Meta's help pages say that since September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram send every buyer to the seller's website to pay. For a creator or a small shop without a big website, that makes the DM the real checkout counter. This guide builds that checkout step by step, with the rules that keep your account safe.

Can you sell on Instagram?

Yes. You can sell from any Instagram account by showing a product and sending buyers a payment link. Meta's rules limit what you sell and how you message people, not whether you sell. There are three ways to get paid:

FeatureDM + checkout linkInstagram ShopLink in bio
Needs a website storeNoYesNo
Sells digital products
Sells servicesMeta allows services through Appointments, not Shop listings
Approval before you startNoneReview, up to 4 weeksNone
Talks to the buyer before they pay
Shop rows: Meta's Business Help Center and Commerce Policies, checked 4 Oct 2026. Sources at the end of the article.

The rest of this guide is mostly about the first column, because it works for the most people: no website, no approval wait, physical or digital. A link in bio asks people to leave the post and go hunting, which is why comment-to-DM beats โ€œlink in bioโ€ for anything you promote in a single post. If you already run a website store, a Shop can sit on top of it (more on that below).

The DM-first sales funnel, step by step

Every sale in this playbook follows the same five moves. Here they are for one example seller, @mira.makes, a one-person jewelry shop dropping a pair of blue hoops at $38.

  1. Post a Reel that shows the product and names the keyword

Show the product in use in the first seconds, say the price, and tell people exactly what to comment. One product per Reel keeps the DM simple.

  2. Let them comment the keyword, or just โ€œprice?โ€

The main keyword is DROP. Add the words people type anyway, like PRICE and HOW MUCH, so those comments get the DM too.

    DROPPRICEHOW MUCH
  3. Open the DM with the price and one button

The first DM is a private reply to their comment. Instagram allows one per comment, sent within 7 days of it, and it lands in message requests if they don't follow you. Keep it short and give them one button to tap.

Hey Jess! The blue hoops are $38 ๐Ÿ’™

    Send me the link
  4. Send the checkout link after the tap

Their tap is a reply, and a reply lets you keep messaging for 24 hours. Now send a link that opens checkout for that product, not your homepage.

    Send me the link

    Here you go ๐Ÿ‘‡

    Buy the blue hoops
  5. Follow up once, then stop

No click after a few hours? Send one friendly reminder while the 24 hours are still open. If they say stop, stop.

Still thinking it over? The link's above. 4 pairs left ๐Ÿ’™

Here is what the first four steps look like on screen. First the Reel, with the keyword in four places:

The blue hoops are back

DROP
โ€œComment dropโ€ฆโ€ ๐Ÿ”Š

  1. On screen

Big text in the first 3 seconds. Plenty of people scroll with the sound off.

  2. Out loud

Say it in the voiceover, and spell it if it's unusual.

  3. First line of the caption

Before the โ€œmoreโ€ cut-off, so it shows without a tap.

  4. Pinned comment

Your own comment with the keyword, pinned to the top.

Then the comments, and the DM that the first matching commenter gets:

Three of the four comments match DROP, PRICE or HOW MUCH. The compliment is left alone. The public reply puts the price where every scroller sees it.

Notice what the buyer never has to do: visit the bio, find the product on a link page, or wait for you to wake up. In DMFa.st, all of this is one automation: the keywords, a few public reply variants, the opener with its button, up to three questions, the message with up to three links, and an optional follow-up. It counts DMs sent and link clicks for each automation. It can't see who paid; your checkout tool tells you that.

New to the mechanics? Our comment-to-DM guide covers the setup, and 60 comment keyword ideas has keywords for shops, coaches and creators.

What could one Reel sell? Run your numbers

Comment-to-DM turns a Reel into a funnel you can count: views, keyword comments, DMs, clicks, sales. Put in your own numbers and see where the money comes from. The starting values are made-up example numbers, not benchmarks. Your Reel insights and your checkout dashboard have the real ones.

Bars use a log scale so small numbers stay visible. Fractions are averages, not half a buyer.

Read it backwards to find the weak step:

  • Few comments? The Reel or the keyword is the problem. Say the keyword on screen, out loud and in the first line of the caption.
  • Plenty of DMs, few clicks? The DM is the problem. Shorter opener, price up front, a button that says what happens next.
  • Plenty of clicks, few sales? The checkout or the offer is the problem: a surprise shipping cost, a slow page, or a link that lands somewhere other than the product.

Every step multiplies the next, so doubling any one rate doubles the revenue. Fix the cheapest one first.

Price in the first line, one question with tap-to-answer buttons, then a link straight to checkout.

Asking one question before the link works when the product has a real choice in it: a size, a shade, a level. The tap answers it, and the link that follows can point to the right variant. If there's no choice to make, skip the question and send the link after the first tap.

Price in the comments or in the DM?

Say the price in public. Put it on screen or in the caption, and let your public reply repeat it. Use the DM for the link, sizes and questions.

Here's why โ€œDM for priceโ€ costs sales: the people who comment โ€œprice?โ€ are only the ones who bothered to ask. Everyone else who wondered scrolled away. A hidden price also makes buyers do work before they know whether they can afford it, and it can look like the price depends on who's asking.

โ€œPrice?โ€ is the most honest buying signal on Instagram. Answer it in public, close it in the DM.

How to take payment on Instagram without a website

You don't need a store to take money. A hosted checkout link gives you a payment page, a receipt for the buyer and a record of who paid. Four that work from a DM, each checked on its own site on 4 Oct 2026:

Razorpay Payment Links

Razorpay Payment Links let you accept payments without a website or app.

Buyers can pay by card, UPI, netbanking, wallet and more. Razorpay's separate UPI-only links work only on Android, so the standard link is the safer pick when some buyers use iPhones.

Two habits make any of them convert better:

  • One product per link. The DM is about the blue hoops, so the link opens the blue hoops, not your catalog.
  • Name the button after what they get. โ€œPay $38โ€ or โ€œGet the presetsโ€ beats โ€œClick hereโ€.

What about bank transfers and โ€œsend a screenshotโ€? It works for a handful of orders. After that you're matching screenshots to usernames by hand. A payment link confirms the payment for you.

Follow up once, inside the 24 hours

Some people tap, look, and get pulled away by the next video. One reminder catches them. Instagram's rules make that possible, but tight: after your private reply, Follow-up messages can only be sent if the recipient responds, and they must go out within 24 hours of that response (Meta, Private Replies). Selling inside that window is allowed: Messages sent within the 24 hour window may contain promotional content (Meta, Send Messages).

You can message

After their tap

Open for 24 hours
Closed
0 h3 h12 h24 h30 h
  • They tap and get the link (0 h)
  • One reminder if they haven't clicked (3 h)
Their tap opens 24 hours of messaging. The link goes out right away; one reminder fits inside. Drawn to scale.

In DMFa.st, the follow-up is a single message after a delay you choose. It's cancelled the moment they click a link or send a message, and it only goes out while the 24-hour window is open. Anyone who replies STOP isn't messaged by your automations again. Keep reminders true, too: only say โ€œ4 pairs leftโ€ when 4 pairs are left.

Instagram Shopping in 2026: what changed and who qualifies

Instagram Shopping is the set of tools that turns a profile into a storefront: a shop on your profile, product tags on posts and Reels, and collections. It changed in 2025, and many guides still describe the old version. Here is what Meta's own pages say:

  • Checkout always happens on your website now

    Meta says so

As of September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram now use website checkout.Meta, Shops and checkout changes

  • Meta no longer takes payments for Shops

Which countries? The full Shops experience is US-only. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, the UK and nine other European countries, Australia, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand are in an open beta, where Some sellers may not have full capabilities. Ukraine and Indonesia get limited features (Meta, supported countries).

So is a Shop worth it? If you sell physical products from a website store in a supported country, it adds discovery: product tags are Tags that feature products from your catalog that can direct customers to purchase those products from your website (Meta). If you sell digital products or services, or you don't have a store, a Shop isn't open to you, and the DM route does the job.

What you can and can't sell on Instagram

Two sets of rules apply. Meta's Commerce Policies cover its shopping features: Shops, Marketplace and product catalogs. The Community Standards cover everything on Instagram, including your posts and DMs.

FeatureInstagram ShopPost + DM link
Physical products you ship
E-books, presets, templates, coursesCommerce Policies: no downloadable digital content
Coaching, sessions, servicesMeta allows services through Appointments
Event ticketsShops: approved sellers only
Alcohol, tobacco, weapons, drugsRestricted Goods rules apply on all of Instagram
Shop column: Meta's Commerce Policies. DM column: our reading of Meta's Community Standards, which apply to all posts and messages. Your payment provider has its own list of what it won't process. Checked 4 Oct 2026.

Some goods are restricted everywhere on Meta's apps. The Restricted Goods and Services standard covers drugs, weapons, tobacco, alcohol, some health and wellness products, online gambling, endangered species, hazardous materials and more. Read it before you sell anything near those categories.

How to sell digital products on Instagram

Digital products suit the DM route best: nothing to ship, no Shop needed, and a checkout made for them, like Gumroad or a Stripe Payment Link, handles the sale. A pattern that works well is the free sample first:

  1. Post a Reel that gives away one piece of the product: one preset, one chapter, one template page. Ask people to comment GUIDE.
  2. The DM sends the free piece behind a reply button, so the tap opens the conversation.
  3. In the same conversation, while the 24 hours are open, offer the full pack with its checkout link. Once, with the price.

What to sell on Instagram

Instagram doesn't publish a list of best sellers, and we won't invent one. A more useful test is whether a product fits how Instagram sells:

  • You can show it in a few seconds. Jewelry on an ear, a print on a wall, a preset before and after.
  • The price allows a quick yes. Something people can buy from a DM without a call.
  • It has one question a DM can answer. Which size, which shade, which level.

Physical products that look good on camera, digital downloads and bookable sessions all pass. Then use the calculator above with your own numbers to see whether the price works at your reach.

What not to do: the moves that get sellers restricted

Selling in DMs works because the buyer asked first. Flip that around and you run into Meta's spam rules. Here is what Meta says, in its own words:

  • Messaging people at very high volume, by hand or by bot

    Meta says so

either manually or automatically, at very high frequenciesMeta, Spam

  • Repetitive messages can be restricted even at lower volume

    Meta says so

restrictions on accounts that are acting at lower frequenciesMeta, Spam

  • Automation can't start conversations with strangers

    Meta says so

the conversation must be initiated by that personMeta, Send Messages

  • DM bots that log in with your password break Instagram's terms

    Strongly implied

accessing or collecting information in an automated way without our express permissionInstagram Terms of Use

  • Links must deliver what the DM promised

    Meta says so

a link that promises one type of content but delivers something substantially differentMeta, Spam

  • Buying likes or followers to look established

    Meta says so

selling, buying, or exchanging for engagementMeta, Spam

Cold DMs are also the slow way to sell. A comment is a buyer raising their hand; a cold DM is you guessing. Thinking of messaging every new follower instead? Read what Instagram allows for new-follower DMs first, and check Instagram's DM limits before any big send. The full rule set for automated DMs, with Meta's wording, is in Instagram DM automation rules.

FAQ: selling on Instagram

Can you sell on Instagram without a website?

Yes. Post the product, send buyers a DM, and use a hosted checkout link: Stripe Payment Links, Gumroad and Razorpay Payment Links all host the payment page for you. You only need a website for an Instagram Shop, which requires product listings that are available for direct purchase from your website.

Do you need a business account to sell on Instagram?

Not to sell through posts and DMs. To automate DMs through Meta's official API you need a professional account, Business or Creator, which you switch to in the app's settings. To open an Instagram shop, Meta asks for an Instagram business account.

How do I take payments in Instagram DMs?

Send a checkout link as a button in the DM, after the buyer taps or replies. Meta announced โ€œpayments in chatโ€ with Meta Pay for qualified small businesses in July 2022 (Meta Newsroom). We couldn't find a current Instagram help page for it on 4 Oct 2026, and Meta has since stopped processing payments for Shops, so plan on a link.

Is it free to sell on Instagram?

Instagram itself is free: its Terms of Use say that Instead of paying to use Instagram, you agree to see ads. Since Meta no longer processes Shop payments, there's no Meta checkout fee either. What you pay is your payment provider's fee on each sale (Gumroad: 10% + $0.50 on direct sales, checked 4 Oct 2026; check your provider's pricing page for the rest). DM automation can be free too: DMFa.st's Free plan includes 1,000 automated DMs a month, and the final message in each conversation ends with โ€œSent with DMFa.stโ€.

What sells best on Instagram?

Instagram doesn't publish sales data by category, so be wary of any list that claims to know. What reliably helps is fit: products you can show in seconds, at a price people can say yes to from a DM, with one question the DM can answer. Test one product per Reel, measure comments, clicks and sales, and keep what earns.
