In February 2018, some people opened their story viewer list and found a tiny camera-shutter icon next to a few names. It marked who had screenshotted their story. Instagram was testing it, and the icon would only show up in their list of story viewers
(TechCrunch). By June it was gone. Instagram told BuzzFeed News it had officially ended this test
(9to5Mac).
The fear outlived the feature. Today the real rule is narrower, and a little stranger: the one place Instagram still tells on you is a chat mode you switch on with a single swipe. Below is every case, with Instagram's own words where they exist and a clear label where Instagram says nothing.

Instagram's own words means the Help Center or Meta says it directly. Not in Instagram's help pages means Instagram is silent, and the answer is what's widely reported. For stories, posts, Reels and profiles, Instagram describes no alert at all.

Instagram's Help Center describes screenshot alerts in only two places: vanish mode and disappearing photos and videos. Everything else in the table is marked as undocumented, because Instagram doesn't say.
Does screenshotting an Instagram DM notify them?
Not in a normal chat. Text, photos and videos sent the usual way are ordinary messages, and Instagram describes no screenshot alert for them. So if you're wondering whether someone can see that you screenshotted their Instagram DM: in a normal chat, no.
What changes the answer is the kind of chat you're in, not what's in the message:
Normal chat: no screenshot alert
Not in Meta's docsInstagram's Help Center describes no alert for normal chats. Widely reported: none is sent.
Vanish mode: alert when a screenshot is detected

The same sentence gets an alert in vanish mode and none in a normal chat. Vanish mode is opt-in: someone in the chat has to switch it on, and Instagram notifies you when a vanish mode message arrives.
Vanish mode screenshots: yes, they're told
Vanish mode is Instagram's self-destructing chat. In Instagram's words, Content sent in vanish mode disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off.
You turn it on by swiping up in a chat, and off the same way.
Two words matter there: if we detect. Instagram doesn't claim to catch every screenshot, and it promises nothing for screen recordings.

Some countries get a timer-based disappearing messages mode instead, and its help page mentions no screenshot alert.
Can you screenshot a view once photo on Instagram?
Not in the app anymore. On October 17, 2024, Meta said it would no longer allow people to use their device to directly screenshot or screen record ephemeral images or videos
sent with view once or allow replay (Meta Newsroom). Instagram's Help Center now says it plainly:
Meta also stopped these photos and videos from opening on Instagram web, so a laptop isn't a way around it. What do you get if you try? Instagram doesn't say. Users commonly report a black image; that's not in Instagram's help pages.
The menu has changed names, too. Instagram's help page now lists three choices when you send a photo or video in a chat: View once, View twice (one more replay before it disappears, like the old “allow replay”) and Unlimited views, which keeps a preview in the chat. Meta's screenshot block names view once and allow replay, so don't count on it for Unlimited views.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
No. Not for stories, Close Friends stories or Highlights, and not for posts, carousels, Reels, profiles or Notes. Instagram's Help Center describes no screenshot alert for any of them. The only time Instagram tried one, for stories in 2018, it ended the test within months.
Even then, 9to5Mac noted that Instagram would still alert users of screenshots taken of disappearing direct messages
. That split, public content silent and disappearing DMs protected, is still the rule today.
Does Instagram notify screen recording?
Instagram doesn't promise a screen-recording alert anywhere we looked. Three cases:
- View once and View twice media: recording is blocked, same as screenshots (Meta, October 2024).
- Vanish mode: Instagram lists screen recording as something people can do, then promises an alert only for screenshots.
- Everything else (normal chats, stories, posts, Reels, profiles): no alert described, and none widely reported.
Flip the quiz above to Screen recording to check one case.
How to know if someone screenshots your Instagram message
In a normal chat, you can't. Instagram gives the sender nothing, so assume anything you send there can be captured. If a message matters, change how you send it:
- Send private photos as View once. Screenshots are blocked in the app, and the status under the photo tells you whether it was seen.
- Use vanish mode for chats you'd mind being captured. You'll get a notification when Instagram detects a screenshot.
- Remember the second phone. A photo of a screen triggers nothing. Instagram's own advice:
Only use vanish mode with people you trust.
What this means for creators and automated DMs
Flip it around. If you run a creator or business account, every DM you send can be screenshotted, and you'll never know. That includes automated DMs.
Automation tools send through Meta's Instagram API, and its docs list ordinary message types: text and links, images, audio, video, PDFs, stickers, reactions, your own posts and templates. No vanish mode, no view once (Meta, Messaging API). Instagram also says Certain professional accounts can't receive messages in vanish mode.
So treat every automated DM as permanent and shareable.
The habit that fixes it: write every DM as if it will end up on someone's story.

Hey Jess! Here's the pantry list you asked for 👇
Nothing in it you'd mind seeing on someone's story. If it gets shared, it's an ad.
- No “just for you” codes unless you're happy for them to spread.
- No personal details in the DM itself, like order numbers or email addresses. Put them behind the link.
- Be honest that it's automated. A screenshot of a friendly bot reads better than one pretending to be you, and Meta has disclosure rules of its own (see Instagram DM automation rules).
In DMFa.st, the automation builder shows a live phone preview of the DM as the follower will see it, and you can have the first DM end with an “🤖 Automated reply” line. That preview doubles as your screenshot test. New to this? Start with our guide to Instagram comment-to-DM.
FAQ: Instagram screenshot notifications
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM in 2026?
Only in vanish mode. In a normal chat, Instagram sends no alert for screenshots of text, photos or videos. View once and View twice photos and videos can't be screenshotted in the app at all.
Can you screenshot a view once photo on Instagram?
Not in the app. Instagram's Help Center says Taking a screenshot is now disabled
for disappearing photos and videos, and Meta stopped them from opening on Instagram web. A photo of the screen with another device still works, and Instagram warns about exactly that for disappearing messages.

Instagram doesn't promise a screen-recording alert anywhere. For View once and View twice media, recording is blocked. In vanish mode, Instagram promises alerts for screenshots only.
How do I know if someone screenshotted my message?

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
No. Instagram tested story screenshot alerts in 2018 and told BuzzFeed News it had officially ended this test
. Close Friends stories and Highlights work the same way.
Can someone see if you screenshot their Instagram DM on a computer?
Not in a normal chat. Meta says view once and replayable photos and videos don't open on Instagram web at all, so there's nothing to capture there.
