You open an old chat and their photo is a grey circle. The name at the top just says “Instagram User”. Your stomach drops.
Maybe they blocked you. But Instagram has no help page that explains that label, and the same grey circle is widely reported when someone takes a break from Instagram, deletes their account, or gets banned. Instagram documents blocking in detail, but only from the side of the person who blocks. Everything you can check from the other side is a clue, not proof.

Instagram doesn't tell anyone they've been blocked or muted, and Restrict is built to be quiet, so this ranks what fits; it can't confirm anything. Checked against Instagram's Help Center, 5 Oct 2026 · dmfa.st
The two most useful signs don't point to a block. They rule things out. If someone else can still see the profile, the account wasn't deactivated, deleted or disabled, because those hide it from everyone. If they still post in a group chat you share, same thing, and Instagram says a group chat doesn't end with a block: if the blocker stays, you and the blocked person will be able to see each other's messages
(Instagram Help).

Instagram Help, what happens when you block
A block hides an account from one person. Deactivation hides it from everyone. From your side, almost every sign looks the same.
Two checks are about you, not them. If your own Activity Status is off, Instagram says You also won't be able to see anyone else's Activity status
(Instagram Help). And if you have a Teen Account, accounts outside Instagram's age-appropriate guidelines can vanish for you, messages included, while adults still see them (Instagram Help). For why a message can sit unread, see where Instagram message requests go.
What happens when you block someone on Instagram DM
This part Instagram does spell out. It's written from the blocker's side:
- The chat stays.
your messaging threads with them will remain in your Direct inbox, but you won't be able to message them.
- Their messages vanish into nothing. If they write to you,
you won't receive those messages, and they won't be delivered later if you unblock them.
- Group chats are your choice. You're asked whether to stay or leave. Stay, and you both see each other's messages.
- Likes and comments go. Theirs are removed from your posts, and
Unblocking someone won't restore their previous likes and comments.
- No tags.
they won't be able to mention your username or tag you.
- New accounts can be covered. You can block their account and
other existing accounts they may have or accounts they may create
. It doesn't apply to their accounts you already follow. - Facebook is separate unless your Facebook account is set up in the same Accounts Center. Otherwise they can still message or call you there, unless you block them on Facebook too.
- Your public activity isn't hidden. They
can still see your likes and comments on posts that were shared by public accounts or accounts they follow.

Does blocking someone on Instagram delete messages?
No. The thread will remain in your Direct inbox
after you block. What blocking does wipe out is anything they send during the block: it's never delivered, and unblocking doesn't bring it back.
What the blocked person's copy of the chat looks like isn't in Instagram's help pages. Reports say the old messages stay visible, often under “Instagram User”, but Instagram doesn't confirm it. If you want a conversation gone, that's a separate step: see how unsending and deleting Instagram messages works.
Blocked vs restricted vs muted vs deactivated on Instagram
Restrict was built to be the quiet option. When Instagram launched it in 2019, it said Restrict lets you quietly protect your account while still keeping an eye on a bully
(Instagram). Here's how the four compare, from your side and from theirs. Every row links its source.

Instagram: Your chat with the restricted person will move from your main Direct inbox to Message Requests
.
Restrict is one built-in way to read someone's messages without them seeing “Seen”; switching off read receipts is another. We compare the options in how to read Instagram messages without them knowing.
Restrict vs block, one line each, from the side of the person who does it:
- Block cuts contact. They can't message you, tag you, or keep their likes and comments on your posts, and they stop following you.
- Restrict keeps contact, quietly. Their DMs go to your Message Requests, you read them without “Seen”, and their new comments are visible only to them unless you approve. Since May 2024 it also stops them tagging or mentioning you.
- Mute changes only your feed and inbox.
Instagram won't let them know you muted them.
- Deactivate hides your own profile, photos, comments and likes from everyone until you log back in. Instagram allows it
once a week
.
Why does it say “Instagram User” or “user not found” in DMs?
Instagram's help pages don't explain either message. Both are widely reported, and the causes people report match account states Instagram does document:
- Deactivated. Photos, comments and likes stay hidden until they log back in (Instagram Help).
- Deleted.
After 30 days of your profile deletion request, your profile and all your information will be permanently deleted
. Instagram adds that the cancel window varies by region, and that the owner can sign up with the same username lateras long as it hasn't been taken by a new person
(Instagram Help). - Disabled by Instagram.
Your account will no longer be visible to others once it's disabled.
(Instagram Help) - Blocked. Sometimes reported. Instagram doesn't say what a blocked person sees.
- Renamed. An old link or an old search leads nowhere, while the account is fine.
Your followers may be notified of your username change
, so if you don't follow them, you won't hear about it. Instagram also lists hacked accounts whose username was changed as a reason someone vanishes from search (Instagram Help).
Think you've been blocked? What to do, and what not to
Being blocked stings, and not knowing for sure makes it worse. A few things actually help:
- Rule out your own settings. Activity Status off on your side hides everyone's. A Teen Account can hide some accounts entirely.
- Give it time. Deactivated accounts come back the moment the person logs in, and a deletion can be cancelled for a while (30 days, Instagram says, though it varies by region).
- If it is a block, let it stand. It's the tool Instagram built so people can step back without a confrontation, and it works the same way for you if you ever need it.
The same goes for asking friends to pass messages along or check the profile for you. It doesn't change what you can do, and it rarely changes their mind.
If someone blocks your business account, what happens to automated DMs?
The same rule, enforced by the API. Every automation tool sends DMs through Meta's Instagram API, and Meta's list of errors has an entry for exactly this case.
Meta's Developer Policies set the expectation behind it: businesses must Immediately respect all requests … by people to block, discontinue, or otherwise opt out
(Meta Developer Policies). The same page warns that messaging that gets excessive negative feedback
may be limited or paused. Meta doesn't define the term there; a block is the plainest feedback there is, in our reading.
What that means for you as a creator:
- Someone who blocked you can't get your automated DMs, from any tool. Don't try to reach them another way.
- A run of refused DMs is a message about your message. Check that people asked for the DM, that it says what it is, and that it's honest about being automated. Our Instagram DM automation rules cover what Meta requires.
Couldn't message @sam.rivera: Instagram wouldn't deliver this message (deleted comment, already replied, or their privacy settings). (Instagram error 551)
In DMFa.st, a DM that Instagram refuses this way shows up in your activity feed as “Couldn't message”, with the reason and Instagram's error code. DMFa.st doesn't retry it and doesn't look for another way to reach that person. If DMs aren't arriving for many people at once, the cause is usually elsewhere: see why Instagram DMs stop working. New to automation? Start with how Instagram comment-to-DM works.
FAQ: blocked, restricted or something else
Does Instagram tell you if someone blocked you?
No. Instagram says People aren't notified when you block them.
Muting is silent too, and Instagram built Restrict to be quiet. There's also no list of who blocked you; Instagram only shows the accounts you've blocked.
Can a blocked person still see your messages?
In a shared group chat, yes, if you both stay in it. In a one-to-one chat, Instagram doesn't say what the blocked person's copy shows. It does say the blocker's thread stays in their inbox, and nothing the blocked person sends during the block is ever delivered.
What's the difference between restrict and block on Instagram?
Block cuts contact: no messages, no tags, and their likes and comments come off your posts. Restrict keeps contact but quiet: their messages go to your Message Requests, they can't see when you're online or if you've read their messages, and their new comments are visible only to them unless you approve.
Does blocking someone on Instagram delete the chat?
No. The thread stays in the blocker's Direct inbox. Messages the blocked person sends during the block are never delivered, even after an unblock. Deleting a chat is a separate step.
Why does it say “Instagram User” in my DMs?
Instagram doesn't document the label. It's widely reported when an account is deactivated, deleted or disabled, and sometimes after a block. If the name comes back later, the account was hidden, not gone.
If I unblock someone, will I get the messages they sent?
No. Instagram says messages sent while they were blocked won't be delivered later if you unblock them.
Their old likes and comments don't come back either.
