Before you reinstall anything, know this: an Instagram DM that “never arrived” may already be in your inbox. Instagram files messages in four places outside your main chat list, and two of them stay quiet by design: the Spam folder sends no notifications at all, and on Business and Creator accounts the General tab has notifications off unless you switch them on. Meanwhile the obvious first check, “is Instagram down?”, has no official answer page. Meta's status site lists 17 products, and the Instagram app isn't one of them.
So the fix depends on exactly what you see. Start with your symptom; the sections after the tool explain each cause with Instagram's own wording.

Is Instagram DM down right now?
There's no official page that answers this for the app. Meta's status site, metastatus.com, describes itself as covering Meta business products. On 5 October 2026 it listed 17, from Facebook Ads Manager to the WhatsApp Business Platform. The Instagram app wasn't among them.
The closest entry is Messenger API for Instagram, the channel businesses and DM tools send through. Meta counts it as available unless it has been unable to send or receive messages for at least 10 consecutive minutes
(Meta Status). This year it logged two incidents: “low disruptions” on 13 April and “high disruptions” on 12 June 2026, each marked resolved within about two and a half hours. When it reports a disruption, automated DMs can fail. When it shows no known issues, the app on your phone can still be having a bad day.
So check it like this:
- Open instagram.com in a browser. Instagram notes that
you can always go to Instagram.com on the web from a mobile browser or computer
(Instagram Help, app not working). If your DMs load there, Instagram is up and the problem is the app on your phone. - Ask someone on a different network to DM you. If theirs fails too, it isn't your phone.
- Look at an outage tracker such as Downdetector. These sites chart user reports. They're third-party, not Meta, so read a spike as a strong hint, not proof. (General troubleshooting, not from Instagram's help pages.)
- Waiting on a DM from a business tool? Check Meta Status for the Messenger API for Instagram.
Instagram messages not loading? Fix the app first
If the inbox spins, chats won't open or messages hang while sending, work through Instagram's own troubleshooting order before touching any settings. Its help page starts with a reminder to always make sure you're running the latest version of the Instagram app
and your phone's system (Instagram Help, troubleshooting).
Update Instagram and your phone
Check the App Store or Google Play for an update. Instagram warns that
some older versions of the app are no longer supported
(Instagram Help, app not working).Restart your phone
Instagram:
Always try restarting your phone or tablet first if you're having trouble
.Try Wi-Fi, then mobile data
Use Instagram on each connection to rule out a weak one.
On Android, clear the cache
Phone Settings → Apps → Instagram. Instagram's Android help page says you can clear the app's cache and data there (Instagram Help, Android settings). On iPhone, skip to the next step.
Delete and reinstall
On iPhone, tap and hold the icon and choose Remove App. On Android, Settings → Apps → Instagram → Uninstall. Instagram says
Your photos and profile info will be saved by Instagram
. Reinstall and log back in.Report the bug
If none of that worked, Instagram says
it could be a bug or broken feature
. Shake your phone in the app and tap Report a problem, or go to Menu → Help → Report a problem. A screenshot helps (Instagram Help, report a problem).
Instagram messages not sending: limits, “Try again later” and Account Status
If the app works but your messages don't go through, Instagram may be limiting your account, or the person you're writing to has settings that stop you. Start with your side.
Instagram doesn't publish a daily number. Our guide to Instagram DM limits sorts what it says from the folklore. If you've had a warning, stop sending rather than retrying.
“Try again later”
Instagram gives one documented reason for this error: if inauthentic activity is detected on your account, you may see an error message that says, “Try again later”
. It can mean someone else has your password. The same page lists the fixes: change your password, revoke third-party apps you don't trust, and turn on two-factor authentication. It also warns against apps that offer likes and followers for your login (Instagram Help, “Try again later”).
Check Account Status
Go to Profile → Menu, then below “More info and support” tap Account Status. Under Features you can't use you can view certain features on Instagram that you can no longer use and take action to resolve the issue
, such as appealing (Instagram Help, Account Status).
Photos and voice notes to someone new
A DM to someone who doesn't follow you is a message request, and it can only contain text
. You can't send photos, videos or voice notes until they accept your message request
(Instagram Help, send a message). Send text first. The full checklist for a single failed message is in Message failed to send?
Why can't I message someone on Instagram?
Instagram's starting point is generous: You can send a message to anyone when using Instagram.
(Instagram Help, who you can message). What stops you is usually a choice the other person made, and Instagram doesn't tell you which one. Here's each one, in Instagram's words:
They switched message requests off
Meta says soChoose whether message requests from people on Instagram go to your Message Requests folder or whether to receive them at all.
Instagram Help, message requestsThey blocked you, and nothing you send reaches them
Meta says soIf the person you blocked sends you any messages in Direct, you won't receive those messages, and they won't be delivered later if you unblock them.
Instagram Help, what blocking doesThey restricted you, so your DMs go to their Requests

Meta says soTeen Accounts are automatically set to only receive messages from accounts they follow or have previously connected with.
Instagram Help, Teen AccountsYou're a teen, and they mostly post content not meant for teens
Meta says soYou also may not be able to message or see content from accounts that primarily share content that may be inappropriate for teens

Instagram Help, chats with Facebook accountsYour request is sitting in their Spam folder

Instagram Help, Spam folderInstagram shows you that you've been blocked
Not in Meta's docsInstagram's pages describe blocking from the blocker's side only. People aren't notified when they're blocked.Instagram Help, what blocking does
Restrictions are the sneaky one. Your messages still send, but they land in their Requests, and you can't see when they're online or whether they've read you. If you suspect a block, our guide to what being blocked looks like in Instagram DMs goes through the signs.

Inside Requests
Requests · Messages → Requests
DMs from people you don't follow, until you accept. Chats with anyone you restrict move here too.
Spam · Inside Requests
Requests that may be spam, offensive, or match your Hidden Words. No notifications at all.
General · Business and Creator accounts
Chats moved out of Primary. Notifications for unread messages are off unless you turn them on.
Locked chats · Swipe down from the top of your inbox
Chats you locked, or hid with a swipe. Their content is hidden from notifications and search.
- Requests. Instagram says
you'll need to accept message requests in your Message Requests folder before they appear in your Chats list
. Messages from people you follow skip it (Instagram Help, message requests). If you restricted someone, your whole chat with them moves here (Instagram Help, restrict). - Spam, inside Requests. Requests
that may be offensive, unwanted, contain spam
or match your Hidden Words go to a separate folder, andYou won't receive notifications for spam.
(Instagram Help, Spam folder). The extra “Hide unwanted message requests” filter is off by default, but on for Teen Accounts (Instagram Help, hide message requests). - General, on Business and Creator accounts.
Notifications for unread messages are turned off for the general folder, but you can turn them on in your settings.
(Instagram Help, Primary and General) - Locked chats. Swipe down from the top of your inbox and tap Locked chats, then unlock with your face, fingerprint or passcode. Swiping left on a chat and tapping Hide chat locks it too, so it's one swipe from vanishing (Instagram Help, lock a chat).
Waiting for a link you commented for?
Automated replies follow the same filing rules. Meta says a creator's private reply appears in the person's Inbox, if the person follows the Instagram professional account, or to the Request folder, if they do not
(Meta, Private Replies). So if you commented a keyword and nothing came, check Requests and Spam, then read why your comment-for-link DM didn't arrive. On the creator's side, each DMFa.st automation's activity shows whether a comment matched and why a DM was skipped, such as “Already sent to this person for this automation”, so a missing link is a lookup, not a guess.
Instagram DM notifications not working? Check three layers
A message notification has to get past three switches: the chat's, Instagram's and your phone's. Any one of them can silence it. If likes and follows still ping but DMs don't, start with layer 1. If Instagram is silent altogether, start with layer 3.
1. The chat
- Open the chat, tap their name, then Mute. Mute messages should be off.
- Group chats have separate switches for Mute messages, Mute @mentions and Mute calls.
- Locked chats hide message content from notifications.
2. Instagram
- Profile → Menu → Notifications. Pause push notifications should be off.
- Below it, check message notifications haven't been switched off.
- Sleep mode (Menu → Time management) pauses notifications at the times you set.
3. Your phone
- iPhone: Settings → Notifications → Instagram → Allow Notifications on.
- iPhone: a Focus can silence Instagram, and Scheduled Summary holds alerts back for later.
- Android: Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Instagram, including its categories.

Three more causes are easy to miss:
- Teen Accounts and sleep mode. Teen Accounts
automatically have sleep mode turned on from 10PM to 7AM every day
, and during itInstagram notifications are muted
(Instagram Help, Teen Accounts). - Spam and General. Requests filed as spam never notify, and the General tab on professional accounts doesn't by default. See the four places above.
- The sender went silent on purpose. Instagram's chat commands include
/silent, which sends a message without a notification (Instagram Help, send a message). One quiet message from a chat that normally pings may be just that.
Instagram messages disappeared? What each cause looks like
Messages vanish for a short list of reasons. Some leave the message somewhere you can still open; the rest are gone for good.
| Feature | Where it went | Can you see it again? |
|---|---|---|
| They unsent itNo longer visible to anyone in the chat | Gone | |
| Vanish mode was onDisappears when someone leaves the chat or turns it off | Gone | |
| Disappearing messages timerSome locations only; tap and hold to see time left | Gone after the timer | |
| You deleted the chatOnly for you; it stays in theirs | Gone for you | |
| You locked or hid the chat | Locked chats | |
| You restricted them | Message Requests | |
| A chat with a Facebook accountRead-only since mid-December 2023 | Still in your inbox | |
| An end-to-end encrypted chatEncrypted DMs ended 8 May 2026 | Instagram doesn't say |
Details worth knowing:
- Vanish mode content
disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off
. The featuremay be unavailable in Japan and for countries located in Europe
(Instagram Help, vanish mode). - Disappearing messages are a newer, timer-based option,
only available in certain locations
. You can still report one for up to 14 days after it disappears (Instagram Help, disappearing messages). - Your data download won't bring them back. Instagram says the file doesn't include messages you've unsent (Instagram Help, unsend) or deleted (Instagram Help, delete a chat).
- Sent the wrong thing yourself? See how to unsend an Instagram message and what the other person still sees.
What happened to encrypted Instagram chats in May 2026?
End-to-end encryption means only the people in a chat can read it, not even Instagram. On Instagram it was an opt-in mode, and it's gone. The help page now opens with one line: End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram is no longer supported as of May 8, 2026.
(Instagram Help, end-to-end encryption)
What the page doesn't say is what happens to the old encrypted chats themselves. When MacRumors covered the change on 5 May 2026, it noted Meta hadn't explained that either (MacRumors, 5 May 2026). Instagram's page still didn't say on 5 October 2026. So if an old encrypted chat looks empty or is missing, update the app and look for the download prompt before anything else. Meta's stated reason, as quoted by The Hacker News: Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs
(The Hacker News, 13 Mar 2026).
Instagram DMs not working: FAQ
Why are my Instagram DMs not working?
Usually it's the app, a limit on your account, or the other person's settings. Update Instagram, restart your phone and try another connection first. If messages fail after a warning or with “Try again later”, check Account Status and secure your account. If it's only one person, they may have message requests off, a Teen Account, or have blocked you.
Is Instagram DM down right now?
Meta doesn't run a public status page for the Instagram app, so test it: open instagram.com in a browser and ask a friend on another network to DM you. Meta Status covers the Messenger API for Instagram, which business tools use. Outage trackers show user reports, but they're third-party.
Why can't I send messages on Instagram?
If you were warned about sending too many messages, Instagram may stop you sending DMs for a period of time. “Try again later” is linked to inauthentic activity on your account. Photos, videos and voice notes can't go to someone who hasn't accepted your request. Check Account Status → Features you can't use.
Why can't I message someone on Instagram?
They may have switched message requests off, blocked you, or have a Teen Account that only takes messages from accounts they follow or have connected with. Old chats with Facebook accounts are read-only. If they restricted you, your messages still send but land in their Requests. Instagram doesn't tell you which one applies.
Why did my Instagram messages disappear?
The sender may have unsent them, or the chat used vanish mode or disappearing messages. A whole chat can move to Locked chats if it was hidden, or to Requests if you restricted that person. Deleted chats are gone for you only. Encrypted chats ended on 8 May 2026.
Why am I not getting Instagram message notifications?
Check the chat isn't muted, that Pause push notifications and sleep mode are off in Instagram, and that your phone allows Instagram notifications outside any Focus. Requests in Spam never notify, and the General tab on Business and Creator accounts is silent by default.
