Test it on a phone
Send the link to yourself in a note or chat and tap it. With the Instagram app installed it should open a chat with @studio.mae. Use a second account or a friend's phone, since it opens a chat with you.
On a computer
Meta says ig.me links aren't supported on Instagram Web. Signed out, our test landed on Instagram's login page. Treat desktop as a bonus, not the plan.
That's the whole trick: every DM link generator puts a username after ig.me/m/. What the generator sites skip is how the link behaves once it's out in the world. By Meta's own docs, it doesn't open chats on Instagram's website. The popular ?text= “pre-filled message” isn't in Meta's docs at all, and when we tried it in a browser, the redirect threw it away. And according to Meta, before anyone types a word, Instagram tells them they came from your link. Here's what really happens, in Meta's words and from our own tests.
What is an ig.me link, and is it official?
Yes, it's official. ig.me is Meta's short-link service for Instagram chats, the Instagram version of Messenger's m.me. The domain's public registration record (WHOIS) lists Instagram LLC as the registrant, and Meta documents the format on its developer site.
- https://ig.meMeta's short-link domain for Instagram
- /m/Opens a chat. Leave it out and you land on Instagram's home page
- studio.maeThe username. Your link breaks if it changes
- ?ref=bioOptional tag for messaging apps. Never a message
ig.me is Meta's own link service
Meta says soa shortened URL service operated by Meta that redirects users to a conversation in Instagram
Meta, Using ig.me LinksIt opens a new chat, or the one they already have with you
Meta says sobased on whether the user had previously messaged your Instagram account
Meta, Using ig.me LinksIt doesn't open chats on Instagram's website

Meta, Using ig.me LinksOn phones, ig.me is set up to open the Instagram app
Not in Meta's docsNot in Meta's help pages. ig.me's own app-link files, the ones iPhones and Android phones read, hand ig.me links to the Instagram app. We read them on 5 Oct 2026.ig.me app-link file
Don't mix it up with your profile QR code. Instagram's built-in QR code is for finding someone's profile (Instagram Help). A DM link QR skips the profile and lands in the chat.
What happens when someone taps your DM link
On a phone with Instagram, the app opens straight into a chat with you. In a new chat, Meta's docs say Instagram shows a notice first, and your ice breakers if you've set any. Ice breakers are up to four questions people can tap to start the chat.
1. They tap your link
Studio Mae
studio.mae
You opened this conversation from a link. studio.mae will see that you used their link once you send a message.
A new chat: Instagram's notice, your ice breakers and an empty message box.
2. They send GUIDE
Studio Mae
studio.mae
GUIDE
Here's the free guide 👇 Shout if you get stuck.
The keyword arrives as a normal message, so an automation can answer it in seconds.
Where they tap changes what they get:
Phone with the Instagram app: a chat with you
Strongly impliedMeta says the link redirects to a conversation in Instagram, and ig.me's app-link files send it to the Instagram app on iPhone and Android.Meta, Using ig.me Links
They've messaged you before: the old chat reopens
Meta says soInstagram just opens that respective thread
Meta, Using ig.me LinksNew chat: Instagram tells them they used your link
Meta says soYou opened this conversation from a link
Meta, Using ig.me LinksNo app, or a computer: Instagram's website
Not in Meta's docsMeta only says Instagram Web isn't supported. In our test on 5 Oct 2026, ig.me forwarded browsers to instagram.com/m/<username>, and a signed-out browser landed on Instagram's login page.
Can an Instagram DM link include a pre-filled message?
No. It's the most wanted feature, and Meta doesn't document one. There is one documented parameter, and it isn't a message.
?text=isn't in Meta's ig.me docs. Some generators add it anyway. When we openedig.me/m/instagram?text=helloin a browser, ig.me redirected toinstagram.com/m/instagramand the text was gone. Meta documents no app behavior for it either, so don't promise it in a caption.- Messenger works the same way. Meta's m.me links page documents a ref parameter for Messenger links. We found no message parameter there either.
What to do instead
- Write the word next to the link. “Tap ig.me/m/studio.mae and send GUIDE.” Fill in the generator's optional word and its snippets do this for you.
- Set up ice breakers. They're the closest thing to a pre-filled message: questions you write, sent with one tap. Meta:
A maximum of 4 questions can be set
, andThis feature is currently not available on desktop
(Meta, Ice Breakers). - Running ads? Meta's ads that click to Instagram Direct have a message template built in (Meta Business Help), so you don't need a link at all.
Where to put your Instagram DM link
The link does its best work outside Instagram, where people find you but aren't in the app yet. Inside Instagram, there's usually a shorter path.
- Great spot
Bios on TikTok, YouTube, X and Threads
People who follow you elsewhere get one tap to a chat with you. Put the word to send right above the link.
- Great spot
Link-in-bio pages
Add it as a button with a title that says what happens, like “DM me GUIDE on Instagram”.
- Great spot
Packaging, flyers, menus, event slides
Print the QR code. QR codes on product packaging and outdoor ads are Meta's own examples (Meta, Using ig.me Links). Keep the white border around the code when you place it.
- Works
Texts and broadcast messages
Meta suggests sending ig.me links by SMS (Meta, Using ig.me Links). Read on a phone, the link opens the chat.
- Works
Email signature and newsletters
Fine for readers on their phones. People reading on a computer won't get a chat, so keep another way to reach you next to it.
- Works
Your website's contact page
Meta names Contact Us pages as a use (Meta, Using ig.me Links). Same catch as email: desktop visitors need a second option.
- Use something else
A link sticker on your own Story
People watching your Story can already reply to it, and the reply lands in the same chat. Ask for a Story reply with the keyword instead.
- Use something else
Ads
On Meta ads, choose Instagram as the message destination (Meta Business Help). On Google Ads, Google disapproves
redirects from the final URL that take the user to a different domain
(Google Ads policy), and ig.me redirects to instagram.com. Link your landing page instead.
Make your DM link reply on its own
A DM link starts a conversation, and that matters more than it looks. Outside narrow cases like replying to a comment, Meta's rule is that Conversations only begin when an Instagram user sends a message to your app user
(Meta, Messaging API). A DM link is an open door for that first message. Add a keyword and an automation can answer it in seconds.
Pick one word
Short, one word, tied to the offer: GUIDE, PRICE, BOOK. We collected keyword ideas by niche; they work the same in DMs.
Say it next to the link, every time
“Tap the link and send GUIDE.” The link can't type it for them, so the instruction has to. Put it in the bio text, on the flyer, under the QR code.
Create a DM keyword automation
In DMFa.st, pick the DM keyword trigger, add GUIDE and any variants, and write the reply with a link button. It matches the keyword as a whole word in any case, so “guide please” works too.
guide please
Here you go 👇
Open the guideAdd ice breakers that say the keyword
DMFa.st sets up to four ice breakers on your account. When someone taps one, DMFa.st reads the question like a typed message, so a DM keyword automation can answer it: “How do I get the free guide?” contains GUIDE. Ice breakers don't show on desktop, so keep the typed keyword as the main instruction.
Same idea as comment-to-DM, with a message as the trigger instead of a comment. The limits that apply to both are in Instagram DM automation rules.
Instagram DM link not working? Check these 8 things
We tested the link's redirects ourselves on October 5, 2026. Each fix says where the answer comes from.
It was opened on a computer
Meta says soMeta:
ig.me links are currently not supported on Instagram Web
(Meta, Using ig.me Links). Test on a phone. The /m/ is missing
We testedig.me/studio.maeisn't a DM link. In our test, ig.me without/m/sent the browser to Instagram's home page, not to a chat or a profile. There's an @, a space or a typo
We testedig.me doesn't check the name.
ig.me/m/@instagramkept the @ in the redirect, and a made-up username redirected exactly like a real one. A broken link looks fine until someone taps it. The generator above strips the @ and flags characters Instagram doesn't allow. You changed your username
Our adviceThe link is your username. Change it, and every old link and printed QR code points at a name that isn't yours any more. Make new ones the same day.
No Instagram app, or signed out
We testedWithout the app, the phone opens the website instead. Apple:
If your app isn't installed, tapping a link to your website opens your website in Safari
(Apple, Universal Links). In our test, a signed-out browser ended on Instagram's login page. You tested it from your own account
Our adviceIt's a link to message you. Test from a second account or a friend's phone, tapping it from a note or chat the way your audience will.
Their message is waiting in Requests
Meta says soIf they don't follow you, their first message
may appear as a message request
, depending on settings (Instagram Help, Who you can message). Check your Requests folder. Our guide to Instagram message requests shows where it hides.Your ?ref= tag never shows up
Meta says soMeta only passes the tag on new chats if ice breakers are set, and the person needs Instagram version 235 or later (Meta, Using ig.me Links). The link itself still opens.
If the link opens fine but messages themselves won't send or arrive, that's a different problem: see Instagram DMs not working.
FAQ: Instagram DM links
How do I make an Instagram DM link?
Add your username to the end of https://ig.me/m/, without the @. For @studio.mae, that's https://ig.me/m/studio.mae. The generator at the top of this page builds it for you, checks the username and makes a QR code.
Can I add a pre-filled message to an Instagram DM link?
No. Meta documents only ?ref=, a tracking tag for messaging apps, not a message. The ?text= some sites suggest isn't in Meta's docs, and a browser redirect drops it. Write the word you want them to send next to the link, or set ice breakers they can tap.
Why is my ig.me link not working?
The usual causes: it was opened on a computer, the /m/ is missing, the username has an @ or a typo, or you changed your username. Without the Instagram app, phones open Instagram's website instead, which asks signed-out visitors to log in.
Do Instagram DM links work on desktop?
Not reliably. Meta says ig.me links are currently not supported on Instagram Web. In our test, a signed-out browser was sent to Instagram's login page. Build for phones and give desktop visitors another way to reach you.
Is ig.me an official Instagram link?
Yes. Meta's developer docs describe ig.me as a short-link service operated by Meta that opens a conversation in Instagram, and the domain is registered to Instagram LLC.
Do DM links work for personal or private accounts?
Meta's ig.me docs only describe business accounts and don't say either way, and we haven't tested a personal account on a phone. The redirect itself doesn't check the account type. Instagram lets anyone message anyone, but a message from someone you don't follow may land in Requests. Automations like DMFa.st need a Business or Creator account.
