Search “auto DM new followers” and you'll find plenty of tools promising it. Then open Meta's developer docs. The list of events Instagram can send an app has 15 entries, from comments to story_insights. A new follower isn't one of them. So how do those tools do it? We read Meta's docs and the tools' own help pages, and found three answers: a Meta beta most accounts can't get, a login hack Instagram's rules forbid, and a workaround that isn't a follow trigger at all. Only the last one works for everyone.
Can you automatically DM new followers on Instagram?
Not with the tools Meta offers everyone. Here is each piece of the answer, and who says so:
Meta's public API has no “new follower” event
Meta says soMeta's table of Instagram webhook fields has 15 entries: comments, mentions, messages, story insights and more. None is a follow, and Meta's Graph API webhook reference has none either.Meta, webhook fields
A business can only message people who message it first
Meta says soConversations only begin when an Instagram user sends a message to your app user
Meta, Messaging APIA comment is the other way in: one private reply per comment
Meta says soOnly one message can be sent to the commenter
Meta, Private RepliesFollowing isn't one of the actions that open a conversation
Strongly impliedMeta lists nine user actions that open the 24-hour messaging window, from sending a message to commenting. Following isn't on the list.Meta, Send Messages
ManyChat's Follow to DM does send a DM when someone follows you
Third-party onlyManyChat calls it a Meta-approved beta and says Meta decides which accounts get it. We found nothing about it in Meta's public developer docs.ManyChat Help

No DM. Nothing is sent, and nothing about your account is at risk.
Look at the last setup. The pinned post doesn't need a follow trigger, because the follower does something Meta does report: a comment. And because they already follow you, Meta delivers the private reply to their main inbox, not to Requests. (Here's how Instagram decides which DMs land in Requests.)
Why official tools can't see a new follower
Official tools hear about your account through webhooks: Meta sends the tool a short notice every time something happens, like a comment or a message. A tool can only react to what Meta sends, and this is everything Meta sends for Instagram:
Events Meta can send an Instagram app
- comments
- live_comments
- mentions
- message_echoes
- message_reactions
- messages
- messaging_handover
- messaging_optins
- messaging_policy_enforcement
- messaging_postbacks
- messaging_referral
- messaging_seen
- response_feedback
- standby
- story_insights
- new follower: not on the list
Even a tool that somehow knew about the follow couldn't send the first message. That part is a messaging rule, not a missing feature:
Meta also lists which actions open that 24-hour window: sending a message, tapping a button in the chat, messaging you from an ad, commenting on your post and a few more (Meta, Send Messages). Following you isn't one of them. The full rule set, with Meta's wording, is in Instagram DM automation rules.
Does ManyChat DM new followers? How Follow to DM works
Yes, for some accounts. In October 2025 ManyChat launched Follow to DM, calling it a Meta-approved feature
and saying it is the exclusive partner to bring it to market first
(ManyChat's announcement, 22 Oct 2025). Almost a year later it's still labelled beta. Meta's public developer docs don't describe it, so every rule below comes from ManyChat's own pages, read on October 4, 2026:
Meta, not ManyChat, decides who gets it
Third-party onlyEligibility for this automation is determined by Meta, not Manychat.
ManyChat HelpSmall accounts are likely left out
Third-party onlyIf you have less than a 1000 followers and do not have significant engagement on your account, you are likely to be ineligible
ManyChat, Follow to DM pageOne Follow to DM per person per week, across all accounts
Third-party onlyMeta allows only one Follow to DM message per user per week.
ManyChat HelpEach follower is welcomed once
Third-party onlyIf someone unfollows and then follows again, it won't run a second time.
ManyChat HelpOnly for people who haven't messaged you before
Third-party onlyFollow to DM only for new followers who haven't interacted with your DMs before.
ManyChat CommunityThe link needs a reply or button tap first
Third-party onlyreplying or clicking a button (excluding URL buttons)
ManyChat HelpYour ManyChat plan doesn't change eligibility
Third-party onlyAccess to this feature is not connected to your Manychat plan.
ManyChat Help
One detail matters more than it looks: the one-a-week limit is per person, across every account using the feature. ManyChat says that if someone follows several such accounts, they'll receive a message only from the first account they followed
. So even an approved account can't count on every new follower getting the DM.

Is it safe to use apps that DM new followers?
It depends on how the app connects. An official tool sends you to Instagram's or Meta's own login screen and never sees your password. A bot asks for your username and password, then logs in and uses Instagram as if it were you. Outside the ManyChat beta, an app that promises to DM every new follower has no official follow event to work from. If it also wants your password, it's the second kind, and that's what Instagram's rules are written against:
Automated access without Instagram's permission breaks the Terms
Meta says soaccessing or collecting information in an automated way without our express permission
Instagram Terms of UseSo does collecting someone's Instagram password
Meta says sorequest or collect Instagram usernames, passwords, or misappropriate access tokens
Instagram Terms of UseSharing your login with an app is a listed reason for restrictions
Meta says soYou may have provided your username and password to a third-party app or website
Instagram HelpYour password gives the app the whole account
Meta says sothey can gain complete access to your account
(Instagram says this about apps that offer likes and followers.)Instagram HelpSending the same DM at volume fits Meta's spam definition
Meta says soeither manually or automatically, at very high frequencies
Meta, Spam standard
| Feature | Official API tool | Follow to DM beta | Password bot |

Even official tools send at a pace Meta controls. If you're planning volume, read Instagram's DM limits first.
How to send a welcome message to new followers (no follow trigger needed)
You can't catch the follow itself. You can catch what new followers do next: they look at your profile, watch your Stories and open your DMs. Put an invitation in each of those places, and the welcome becomes a reply to something they asked for.
Pin a “start here” Reel with a comment keyword
Instagram lets you pin up to 3 posts to the top of your profile (Instagram Help). Make one a short welcome: who you are, what you post, and “comment START for my starter guide”.
Every matching comment gets one private reply within seconds. Since the person already follows you, it lands in their main inbox.
Post a Story that asks for a reply
When a Reel brings in a wave of followers, post a Story: “New here? Reply WELCOME”. A Story reply arrives as a message, so it opens a normal 24-hour conversation, with room for a link and a follow-up question.
Set up FAQs in your DMs
Instagram shows up to four questions to anyone who opens a chat with you. Instagram calls them frequently asked questions; Meta's API calls them ice breakers. One quirk of the built-in version, from Instagram's Help Center: when someone taps a question,
their message will go to your Requests in Chats
(Instagram Help).Turn on an instant reply for first messages
If your account is connected to Meta Business Suite, its Instant reply automation will
Reply with a greeting when someone messages you for the first time
(Meta Business Help). It greets first-time messengers, not followers, but every new follower who DMs you gets a welcome.Greet people by hand with a saved reply
Prefer to welcome people yourself? Hold down a message you sent, tap More, then Save, and give it a keyboard shortcut (Meta Business Help). Keep the pace human: Meta's spam rules cover high-frequency activity done
manually or automatically
.

How DMFa.st handles new followers
Plainly: DMFa.st has no new-follower trigger, because Meta's public API doesn't offer one. Its four triggers all start with something the person did: a comment keyword on a post or Reel, a Story reply, a Story mention or a DM keyword. You can also set up to four ice breakers for each connected account. For welcoming followers, that means the pinned START Reel and the WELCOME Story above, both running on Meta's official API.
What should your welcome DM say?
Because the DM answers something they asked for, deliver it first and sell later. The difference is easy to see side by side:

- Deliver what the keyword promised in the first message or right after the first tap.
- Use a reply button before the link. A reply or button tap counts as a response; a link button tap doesn't. ManyChat's Follow to DM docs say the same.
- End with one easy question. Each reply restarts the 24-hour window.

FAQ: auto DMs for new Instagram followers
Can you automatically DM new followers on Instagram?
Not with Meta's public API. It has no follow event, and a business can only message people who message or comment first. The only exception we found is ManyChat's Follow to DM beta, which ManyChat says Meta enables account by account.
Does ManyChat DM new followers?
Yes, through its Follow to DM beta, if Meta approves your account. ManyChat says accounts under 1,000 followers without significant engagement are likely ineligible, each follower is welcomed once, and Meta allows one Follow to DM message per person per week.
Is it safe to use apps that DM new followers?
Not if the app asks for your Instagram password. Instagram lists sharing your login with a third-party app as a reason accounts get restricted, and its Terms ban automated access without permission. If you already shared it, change your password.
How do I send a welcome message to new followers on Instagram?
Invite them to start the conversation: a pinned Reel with a comment keyword, a Story that asks for a reply, and FAQs in your DMs. Each of those can trigger an automated DM on Meta's official API.
Is there a free way to auto DM new followers?
ManyChat says Follow to DM works on its Free plan if Meta approves you, with an opening DM and one follow-up containing a link. Instagram's FAQs and Meta Business Suite's instant reply are free but only answer people who message you. DMFa.st's Free plan (invite-only for now) includes 1,000 auto-DMs a month for comment, Story and DM keyword triggers, and its DMs end with “Sent with DMFa.st”.
Does Instagram send an automatic welcome message to new followers?
No. The built-in tools in Instagram's and Meta's help pages (FAQs, saved replies and Meta Business Suite's instant reply) all respond to someone opening a chat or messaging you. None of them fires on a follow.
