ManyChat Instagram not working? 10 of the 14 causes are on Instagram's side

ManyChat comment-to-DM stopped on Instagram? Pick your symptom, answer up to three questions and get the cause and fix, from a settings switch to a Meta outage.

Here's the odd thing about ManyChat's own troubleshooting article for Instagram. For accounts connected since June 2024 it has three steps, and two of them happen in the Instagram app, not in ManyChat. That's the pattern with comment-to-DM: most of the ways it fails come from Instagram's rules and settings, so they break every tool the same way, ours included. It's also why a guide to fixing ManyChat sits on the DMFa.st blog. The diagnosis below works whichever tool you use.

Find your cause in a minute

Pick what you see. The doctor asks up to three yes-or-no questions, then shows the most likely cause, the fix and the page that backs it up.

What do you see?

Pick the closest symptom. Up to three yes-or-no questions follow.

In our list, 10 of the 14 causes are Instagram rules, settings or outages. The other four are settings inside your tool: the keyword rule, which post the automation covers, a follow check, and your plan's contact limit.

What ManyChat's own help center says to check

ManyChat's Instagram automation troubleshooting article splits accounts by when they were connected. For accounts connected on or after 14 June 2024, it's three steps:

  1. Use a professional account

ManyChat asks for a Creator account up to 500,000 followers and a Business account above that. In Instagram: Settings and activity → Account type and tools → Switch to professional account.

  2. Turn on Allow access to messages

In the Instagram phone app: Settings and activity → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools. This is the switch that lets connected tools send your DMs.

  3. Refresh permissions in ManyChat

Click the Help button in ManyChat, then Refresh permissions, and approve everything Instagram asks for.

Accounts connected before that date get seven steps, including the linked Facebook Page and its age and country restrictions. The same page lists two limits that stop a flow from going live: text with buttons is capped at 640 characters and text without buttons at 1,000, and going over “will prevent you from publishing your flow.”

Nothing happens when people comment

No public reply and no DM means the comment never reached the automation, or it did and didn't match. Instagram's rules decide the first part:

  • Only public professional accounts send comment events

    Meta says so

Private accounts do not receive comment or mention notifications.Meta, Webhooks setup

  • One private reply per comment

    Meta says so

Only one message can be sent to the commenterMeta, Private Replies

  • Sent within 7 days of the comment

    Meta says so

within 7 days of the creation time of the commentMeta, Private Replies

  • Only a person's first comment on a post triggers it

    Third-party only

ManyChat says its trigger “only activates for the first comment a user leaves under a post or reel” and calls it an Instagram limit. Meta's docs only say one private reply per comment.ManyChat Help, Comments trigger

Business accounts can't be private, but Creator accounts can. A private Creator account gets no comment events at all.

That last row explains an easy false alarm: you comment twice from the same test account and nothing happens the second time. Test from a second account that has never commented on the post, and not from the account the automation runs on.

Then the matching. ManyChat documents several keyword rules, and they treat the same comment very differently. Here's the keyword LINK under three of them:

FeatureMessage isContainsContains whole word
LINK
link please 🙏
Link!A symbol counts as extra
links?Whole word: our reading
I linked itContains matches inside words
🔗
lnk
Based on the rule definitions on ManyChat's Keywords trigger page: “Message is” fails on “any additional words, letters, or symbols”, and keywords aren't case-sensitive. That page covers DM keywords. The comment-trigger page doesn't say which rule comments use, so test yours.

Two habits fix most mismatches: add the variants people actually type, like LINK and LINKS, and show the keyword in the caption and on screen exactly as you set it. Our comment keyword ideas cover plurals, typos and other languages.

Also check where the automation is attached. ManyChat's comment trigger covers one specific post, all posts, or only your next post, so a new Reel isn't covered by an automation tied to last week's post. Collab posts only work when the account that first published them is connected, and posts made only as ads in Ads Manager don't appear in the post picker.

The public reply posts, but no DM arrives

This split is the best clue you'll get. The comment arrived, it matched, and your account replied in public. Only the private message failed. Usually it's one of three things.

Allow access to messages is off. A public reply is a comment, not a message, so it can keep working while every DM is refused. Turn the switch on (path above), then refresh permissions.

The person can't receive it, or it's in Requests. Meta's rule: the private reply goes to the inbox if the person follows you, or to the Request folder, if they do not. Plenty of people never open Requests. Instagram also lets anyone choose not to receive message requests at all, and Teen Accounts only receive messages and group chats from accounts you follow or are connected to (Instagram Help). Our guide to Instagram message requests shows where these DMs end up.

Instagram is limiting your messages. From Instagram's Help Center: If you were warned about sending too many messages and continue to do so, you may not be able to send more direct messages for a period of time. ManyChat's advice for staying clear: vary your public replies and avoid very short replies or ones consisting only of emojis. A busy post also queues, because Meta allows 750 private replies an hour per account on posts and Reels. Instagram DM limits has the math.

Most comment-to-DM flows send two messages: an opener with a button, then the link after the tap. If the tap never happens, neither does the link. ManyChat counts that as a Run but not a Send.

The opener arrived. The link waits for a tap that never came, so it never goes out.

The tap is a reply. Now the account may message back, and the link lands right after.

Meta's rule is the reason for the tap. After a private reply, Follow-up messages can only be sent if the recipient responds, within 24 hours of that response. A reply button counts as a response. ManyChat warns that a button set to Open website doesn't: it does not count as an opt-in, so the 24-hour window doesn't open and the flow can't continue.

Three more things stop the link:

  • Quick replies on a computer. Meta says quick replies are currently not available on desktop (Meta, Quick Replies). If the link waits for a quick-reply tap, laptop users are stuck.
  • A follow check. With ManyChat's optional follow step on, people who don't follow you get a follow prompt first and the link only after. Test from an account that doesn't follow you.
  • The URL itself. ManyChat's checklist says URLs must also be valid and properly formatted. Meta's Spam rules list misleading links and deceptive redirect behavior, so link straight to your own domain rather than through a chain of redirects.

On the other side of the screen? If you commented on someone's post and never got the link, our comment for link guide covers it from the viewer's side.

It works for you, but not for other people

Your test passed, so the setup works. The difference is the people commenting.

  • They type it differently. You typed LINK. They type “link pls 🙏” or “links”. See the rule table above.
  • You've hit a contact limit. ManyChat's Free plan includes 25 Active Contacts a month. If you set a contact limit on a paid plan, automations continue running only for contacts who are already active during that billing cycle (ManyChat Help). You're already counted, so your test works; new commenters get nothing. Plans bought in the iPhone or Android app stop working for any new contacts above the limit. Our ManyChat pricing breakdown explains how contacts are counted.
  • They don't follow you. The DM went to their Requests, or their settings don't accept requests.
  • They're on a computer. No quick replies on desktop.

It worked, then stopped

A stop on every post points at the connection or at Meta. A stop on one post points at the automation's settings.

  • The connection expired. Meta's long-lived Instagram tokens are valid for 60 days and your tool refreshes them (Meta, overview). A password change ends access early: Meta's error list includes “Password Changed”, after which the person must log in to the app again. Removing the app under Website permissions in Instagram does the same. Fix: Help → Refresh permissions in ManyChat.
  • The new post isn't covered. An automation tied to one post, or to your “next post”, won't fire on the Reel after it.
  • You crossed the contact limit mid-month. ManyChat notifies you at 70%, 90% and 100% of it, and the count resets each billing month.
  • Instagram restricted your messaging after a burst. Meta's error for it: You are temporarily restricted from sending messages.
  • Another tool took over the conversation. Trying a second tool while ManyChat is still live? Meta routes each conversation to one app and rejects the other: Message failed to send because another app is controlling this thread now.

Is Instagram down for automations?

Sometimes it really isn't you. ManyChat, DMFa.st and every other official tool send through Meta's API, so when Meta's messaging fails, they fail together. ManyChat's public status page keeps a record:

ManyChat's status page, 1 January to 4 October 2026. Vertical lines are Meta-wide outages; the bar is a Meta-side bug ManyChat still lists as open. Drawn to scale.

The last large-scale comment incident ManyChat reported came just before this year. On 19 November 2025 it reported that comments on posts are not triggering the automation, and its team called it a Meta-side bug that requires changes on their end (ManyChat Community). The stopgap it suggested was DM keyword automations, and Meta fixed it about 11 hours later. The reverse happened on 25 April 2026: public replies under comments failed for some accounts connected with Instagram login while DMs kept going, and ManyChat marked it solved two days later.

The open Follow-to-DM bug matters if you send welcome DMs to new followers. Our guide to auto-DMing new Instagram followers covers how that trigger works.

How to check right now:

  1. ManyChat's status page and its community Known issues tracker.
  2. Meta Status, under Developer Platform → Messenger API for Instagram.
  3. Your tool's activity log. Comments arriving but sends failing means the problem is on the sending side.

If you're switching tools

Switching fixes ManyChat-side problems, like a contact limit or a builder you find confusing. It doesn't fix Instagram-side ones. A private account, a switched-off messages setting or a Meta outage will break the next tool too, so run the doctor first.

If you do move, turn the old automation off before the new one goes live, so two apps aren't competing for the same conversation. DMFa.st is one option: it connects through Instagram's own login, flags an account that needs reconnecting, and shows why each skipped comment got no DM, such as “Already sent to this person for this automation” or a monthly limit. We compared the main options, ManyChat included, in ManyChat alternatives.

ManyChat Instagram troubleshooting FAQ

Why is my ManyChat Instagram automation not sending DMs?

If the public reply posts but no DM arrives, the usual cause is the Allow access to messages switch in the Instagram app being off. Next most likely: the connection needs a Refresh permissions in ManyChat, the DM went to the person's Requests because they don't follow you, or Instagram is limiting your messages after a burst. If nothing fires at all, check the account is a public Business or Creator account and the comment matches your keyword.

Why does ManyChat only reply to some comments?

ManyChat's comment trigger only runs on a person's first comment under a post, so repeat comments are ignored. Comments that don't match the keyword rule are skipped, plurals and emoji included. Past your plan's contact limit, new people may not get answered. And on a busy post, Meta caps private replies at 750 an hour per account, so replies can queue.

Is Instagram down for automations?

Check ManyChat's status page and Meta Status (Messenger API for Instagram). Meta-side outages hit every official tool at once: ManyChat logged Meta-wide outages on 12 June, 23 June, 19 July and 22 July 2026, and it still lists a Meta-side Follow-to-DM bug that began on 17 March 2026.

Why did my ManyChat link stop working?

If the opener arrives but the link doesn't, the person probably never tapped the button that releases it, or they're on a computer, where quick replies don't show. If the link arrives but won't open, test the exact URL in a browser and link straight to your own domain. A link that breaks Meta's Spam rules, like a deceptive redirect, can be blocked.

Does ManyChat work with a private Instagram account?

Not for comments. Meta only sends comment events for public accounts. Business accounts are always public, but a Creator account can be private, and then comment automations get nothing to react to.

Do I need a Facebook Page for ManyChat on Instagram?

Not for accounts connected since 14 June 2024. ManyChat's checklist for those accounts has no Facebook Page step, and Meta's Instagram Login API serves Instagram professional accounts without requiring a linked Facebook Page. Older connections still rely on the linked Page.
